The three pile heights, and what each one is for

Choose the pile height by traffic, not by looks. Short pile survives feet and paws. Long pile looks deeper and lies down faster.

Where we buy the grass

We install Belgotex and Easigrass ranges alongside directly imported yarn. The brand matters less than the specification. Compare pile height, stitch density and backing before comparing names.

Backing carries the drainage. Perforated latex suits a garden on soil. Polyurethane suits a balcony or a roof, where the water has one place to go.

Astro turf, artificial grass or synthetic lawn?

People use four words for one product, and the difference is history rather than material. AstroTurf is a registered brand name that became a generic term, the way Hoover did for vacuum cleaners. Nothing sold as astro turf in a South African garden centre is necessarily that brand.

One thing does separate them in practice. Astro turf usually describes a short dense sports pile, closer to our 25mm than our 40mm, because that is what hockey and cricket surfaces use. Ask for astro turf and expect the short end of the range.

  • Dogs. 25mm, sand infill, no rubber. See artificial grass for dogs.
  • Children. 25mm on the traffic lines, 30mm elsewhere.
  • A lawn nobody walks on. 40mm looks deepest and lasts longest where it is left alone.
